
WARNER—Connors State Cowgirls sustained its fourth consecutive loss, falling to Western State 56-49 in a homecoming clash at Melvin Self Field House.
The loss drops the Cowgirls to 17-6 on the year and 4-4 in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Western State improves to 12-9 on the year and 5-4 in league play.
Cowgirls will now open the month of February with two road games, playing Eastern Oklahoma State on Monday and Seminole State Thursday. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
Caylin Livers led the Cowgirls scoring with 11 points with Chalyn Mayes scoring 10. The only Cowgirls to score in double figures.
Gena Rogers led Western State with 15 points with teammate Delcia Brown adding 10 in the win to complete the Pioneers double figure scoring.
Western scored eight unanswered points to open the third quarter for a 29-25 lead.
It was a lead they never relinquished the remainder of the game, holding its largest margin of 11 points 51-40 with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Cowgirls came no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Despite a sluggish first quarter start, the Cowgirls held a four-point lead at the half 25-21.
It took the Cowgirls eight minutes and 18 seconds before they put points on the scoreboard in the opening quarter of play as Western jumped out to a 7-0 advantage.
Connors grabbed its first lead at the 9:25 mark of the second period on a pair of free throws by Mikayla Maxwell.
Western regained the lead on a pair of free throws before Cowgirls' Livers drained a trey for an 11-9 Connors lead.
Western tied the game at 11-all with 8:25 remaining before the Cowgirls took the lead for good in the second quarter, outscoring Western 7-4 to make it 18-15 with 4:48 remaining.
In the final 3:47 each team scored seven points each for the 25-21 score at the half.
